3000 Miles on the back of a Kawasaki Ninja 400

I'm a big fan of smaller capacity bikes, and having one of these for the past 3000 miles has reminded me why.

Let's start with the looks of this little beauty, sharing a similar silhouette to the now discontinued ZX6-R, I think it's a fantastic looking little bike, sharp lines, a svelte race like rear end and a proper old school side mounted pipe.

With it being painted in the Kawasaki Racing Team colours, I had quite a few people mistake it for a ZX6-R and certainly shocked them to find out it was 'only' a 400.

The Ninja 400 feels like a genuine big bike, although the tank is smaller than what you'll be used to, once you get going, it doesn't feel like you are on a small bike at all. The position you sit in is nice and relaxed, with nice high bars and although the pegs are tucked up under you (giving PLENTY of ground clearance, you're not scraping pegs on this!) it's overall a comfortable machine. I had plenty of multi hour rides on this bike, with little to know aches or pains, which makes a change!

The 399cc twin cylinder engine pumps out a healthy 44bhp, revs freely throughout the whole rev range up to the 12,000 red line (you'll be shifting at around 11k to keep that power coming.) There is a definite pick up at about 6-7k rpm, giving it a really engaging ride, keep those little pistons spinning and you'll be grinning ear to ear! The induction noise of a wide-open throttle is sweet, the exhaust noise is nothing interesting with a standard set up however, put a louder pipe on it and it really brings it alive!

The handling is great, it's never going to be a full-on sports bike, but for our roads that’s probably a good thing! The suspension is plush, steering is light and agile, holds the road nicely, what's not to love?

Brakes are good, not super bitey but plenty of progression, resulting in good stopping power (perfect for newer riders!)

Tyres are Dunlop GPR-300s, I found them great for general road riding, even down to minus temperatures and also in the wet

Cheap on tax, cheap on insurance, over 65mpg even when ridden hard, it makes it a really economical fun little bike!

From experienced riders that can push the bike to its absolute limit, to new riders who are looking for an unintimidating first bike the Kawasaki Ninja 400 could be for you!
